Humanitarian and Military Problem of Landmines
Landmines present a severe threat to both civilians and military forces, causing 4,710 civilian casualties in 2023 alone and hindering post-conflict recovery. Traditional demining methods are not only dangerous but also costly, ranging from $300 to $1,000 per mine, while continuing to obstruct military progress.
Hard to detect
Detecting landmines is challenging due to non-metallic components and optical camouflage. However, years of research have identified optical detection as the quickest and most efficient method for automated landmine identification.
Technological Approach
Landmines can be identified using low-cost, uncooled InfraRed cameras, which leverage temperature differences between the mines and surrounding ground under the right conditions.
